Ranking My printers

My 3D Printer Lineup

A personal look at the three printers in my current setup, why I rank them the way I do, and how I’m starting to use them with more purpose as I move toward building More knowledge regarding Home 3D printing.

My 3D Printer Lineup

I’ve built my printer collection one machine at a time, and each one has ended up playing a different role in the way I print. The order says a lot about how my setup has evolved: I got the Sovol SV08 first, the Flashforge 5M second, and the Anycubic Kobra X Most recently.

After getting over the initial shock of realizing I could create just about anything, I’ve started looking at these machines in a more intentional way and thinking seriously about building a business around them.

It also hints at where my interests may be headed next.

The Kobra X

Right now, the Anycubic Kobra X sits at the top of my ranking. It’s the one that feels the freshest and the most exciting, especially with its multicolor capability and the advanced technology in the toolhead. It’s the machine that has the least hours on it so with time my opinion may change And I’ll make updates here as that happens but as of right now I’m really enjoying it.

For me, the Kobra X feels like a printer that points toward the future of the hobby. It’s the machine that makes me think about what Upgrades may potentially become available for open source printers such as my SV08 With time.

The Flashforge 5M

My Flashforge 5M comes in second, and it earns that spot because it is the printer I trust when I want good results without much setup drama. I have never had a problem out of this machine!!

I keep this machine easily accessible to the kids and my wife because of the no frills experience,

The tradeoff is that the build volume is a little limited, and the remote connection can be spotty enough to turn simple use into a networking problem now and then. Even so, it remains a solid printer in the lineup because it does the basics well and gets out of the way when I want to print.

That kind of reliability matters. Not every printer has to be a project, and this one reminds me that sometimes the best machine is the one that just works.

The SV08

The Sovol SV08 is the printer I got first, and it has become my project machine. It gives me the biggest build size and the most room to experiment, which is part of why I keep coming back to it.

I’ve also put a lot of work into the SV08, so it carries a different kind of value for me. My current setup includes a second camera/endoscope, a MicroSwiss FlowTech Hotend, optimized macro and printer.cfg settings, Orca G-code and settings, Klipper Adaptive Meshing & Purging, and a printed tophat.

At the same time, it has been the machine that has asks a lot from me. The nozzle has been a recurring concern because it has clogged unexpectedly at times, even though the print quality can be excellent when everything is dialed in.

That’s part of why I still value it so much. The SV08 is open enough that I can keep shaping it into what I want, and it still leaves room for future ideas that I haven’t built yet. My current upgrade plan for it includes a multiple material unit, specifically the Low Rider MMU V2.0. I also intend to add a BTT Eddy Probe and may eventually take the printer to mainline Klipper as part of that larger evolution.

What Comes Next

What I like about my current lineup is that each printer covers a different part of the hobby. The Kobra X is the exciting new machine, the Flashforge 5M is the dependable one, and the SV08 is the platform I can keep developing over time.

Looking ahead, I can already see myself getting more interested in printers that offer a different kind of workflow, especially belt printers like the IdeaFormer IR3 V2. That kind of machine opens up ideas around continuous printing, long parts, and a very different way of thinking about build space, which is why its holding my attention.

More than anything, I’m at the point where these printers are becoming tools with purpose. I’m still excited by what they can do, but now I’m also thinking about how to use them more intentionally, how to create things that people actually want, and how to turn that creativity into something That can be used to generate additional revenue for my household.

Current focus

Business intention: moving from pure experimentation toward creating with more purpose.

SV08 path: Low Rider MMU V2.0, BTT Eddy mount, and possible mainline Klipper.

Future interest: belt printers like the IdeaFormer IR3 V2.
